Introduction

This on-campus 3-year full-time (4 years honours) course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart and Launceston. This course may be studied part-time.

Admission & Prerequisites

Possession of the University's basic admission requirements. TCE Computing or Mathematics subjects are not required.

Course Objectives

The Bachelor of Computing is a comprehensive 3-year degree course that encompasses computer science and software engineering with an applied orientation. Three specialisations are available:

  • Computing (Hobart and Launceston) - software development and systems management.
  • Games Technology (Hobart only) - software engineering with a games orientation, provides a thorough understanding of the theory, design and programming techniques required for producing computer games and simulation.
  • Human Interface Technology (Launceston only) - provides a thorough understanding of visualisation, simulation and VR and AR techologies.

A graduate of the Bachelor of Computing should be able to contribute to meeting the computing (ICT) needs of individuals, organisations and the wider community. The graduate should be able to:

1. demonstrate foundational computing knowledge of:

  • programming, algorithms & data structures
  • systems and applications
  • historical and current trends

2. apply knowledge of computing principles and technical skills to develop and maintain solutions by:

  • using abstraction and computational thinking
  • evaluating strengths and weaknesses of potential solutions
  • creating artefacts using a variety of techniques and tools
  • selecting and following a recognised software development methodology
  • adapting existing and emerging computing technologies.

3. act professionally by:

  • communicating in different modes to diverse audiences
  • adhering to professional and ethical codes of conduct
  • working independently and collaborating in diverse teams
  • considering economic, social, legal, and ethical consequences

Career Outcomes

Students are prepared for careers and research in the area of Information Technology (IT). Current forecasts indicate a world wide shortage of IT professionals for at least the next ten years. Computing professionals get well paid, interesting positions in almost any area - government, commerce, industry, education and research. The range of careers is wide, including: website management, system administration, client support and training, program design, development and testing, mobile computing and telecommunications, graphics, internet and web engineering, artificial intelligence and so on.

Graduates of the Games Technology specialisation will find employment in games production companies of all sizes. Games and simulations are closely related, and graduates of the degree would be equally employable in either industry. Graduates of the course can expect to work in a wide range of games specific areas including game designer, game developer, game programmer, component integrator, and simulation developer. The Computing fundamentals studied in the course also equip students for traditional IT careers including project manager, software engineer, programmer, software analyst, software designer, software tester and many more.


Articulation to/from Course

If students have completed the TAFE Diploma of Information Technology they may be granted up to one year's advanced standing.

Students who have completed a TAFE Certificate IV in IT are eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Computing concurrently with the Diploma of IT to complete both in three years (part time studies also available).

Students that have completed a concurrent enrolment between the four year Bachelor of Computing/TAFE Diploma of Information Technology course articulate into the Bachelor of Computing with Honours.


The BComp articulates into the S4D Bachelor of Computing with Honours.

Professional Recognition

Undergraduate students of the BComp are eligible for student membership of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). On completion of the degree and entry into the computing profession, graduates can apply to become full members of these bodies.
