Introduction
A Doctor of Philosophy enables a candidate to use expertise at the frontier of a field of research and make a significant original contribution to knowledge through their research. The research takes place over 3-4 years of study or equivalent part-time and normally results in a thesis or equivalent of traditionally circa 80-100,000 words (depending on the discipline), written in English.
Doctorates in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology are available in all Schools in the Faculty, across a wide range of discipline areas:
agricultural science
earth sciences
physics
architecture and design
engineering
plant science
chemistry
geography
psychology
computing
environmental studies
zoology
information systems
mathematics
The research topic will reflect the candidates' own interests and the research expertise of their supervisors. Further information on the research areas of supervisors in these disciplines is available from the Web Access Research Portal (WARP) site.
The campus of study will vary depending on the location of the candidate, the supervisor and the research field.
Currently there are no fees for domestic candidates as they are provided with a Commonwealth Research Training Scheme place. Fees for international candidates are here.
Applicants should apply after finding a potential supervisor and discussing and agreeing on their proposed topic. Applicants will be considered who have:
a bachelor's degree with first class honours or second class honours, upper division; or
a masters degree with a minimum research component (ie a thesis) or;
partial completion of a masters by research (up to 75%)
equivalent substantial demonstrated sector experience and/or published research work;
A Doctor of Philosophy produces individuals who can apply a substantial body of knowledge to research, investigate and develop new knowledge, in one or more fields of investigation, scholarship or professional practice.
Graduates will fulfil the skill requirements in the Australian Qualification Framework for this degree and the University of Tasmania expects all graduates of a Doctor of Philosophy to meet its Generic Attributes.

In Australia and around the world, Doctor of Philosophy graduates are highly regarded as potential employees. The skills and attributes gained in the degree can be the entry to a post doctoral career at a university, and graduates are also highly sought after for positions across the spectrum of available careers.
