Introduction
This on-campus, 4-year (minimum) full-time course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart. Subject to attendance and timetable requirements, part-time study may be possible.
Admission & Prerequisites
Minimum University entrance requirements including Satisfactory Achievement (SA) in CHM5C Chemistry 5C (or a pass in the summer school bridging unit
KRA001), and MAP5C Mathematics Applied 5C or MME5C Mathematics Methods 5C (or a pass in the summer school bridging unit
KMA003); or a TCE score of 80 or more (students lacking the Chemistry prerequisite will still need to enrol in the bridging unit).
Course Objectives
The objectives of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree are to:
Provide a sound basis in the physical and biological sciences in the first two years of study and an introduction to the main subject areas to be covered in years 3 and 4;
Provide, in the final two years of study, opportunity for specialisation and advanced study of the major discipline areas of agricultural science;
Produce graduates with scientific knowledge and skills in the principles of agricultural production and sustainable resource management that meet the needs of industry, business and government.
Career Outcomes
The degree provides an excellent basis for a professional career in agriculture, with wide-ranging opportunities nationally and overseas. Employment prospects for graduates include positions in agribusiness, research, production agriculture or horticulture, resource management, business management, government agencies, education, forestry, aquaculture, food processing, food technology, waste management, marine and Antarctic research.
Articulation to/from Course
Candidates with other tertiary studies may be granted status for work completed and deemed appropriate to this degree. They are advised to apply for such credit in the first instance to the Faculty Office.
Students completing their third year with sufficient merit will be invited to enter Honours in their fourth year of study. Honours graduates may apply for entry into Masters or PhD courses.
Professional Recognition
Graduates from the course are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (AIAST).
