Introduction

Special Note: This Masters course has been approved by DEEWR for student income support payments (i.e. Youth Allowance and Austudy).

The Master of Antarctic Science is a specialised coursework Masters program in polar marine biology. It provides students with advanced instruction and training in emerging approaches and technologies in marine biology. The course is designed to produce expertly trained scientists with international experience and research skills in the area of Antarctic marine science.

MAntSc students will develop an understanding of the roles the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic marine ecosystem play in the global climate system. The MAntSc was developed as part of the new International Antarctic Institute (IAI) and the UNESCO/Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environmental Sciences. The IAI is a multi-disciplinary consortium of international universities. MAntSc students are able to cross-credit study programs and may choose to take electives available at one of the twenty partner universities as well as undertake their research project in association with an IAI partner.

Admission & Prerequisites

Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) with a major in Life Sciences (or equivalent)

Course Objectives

The course aims to facilitate the development of the following educational objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of Antarctic marine science concepts and their relationships to other polar and general marine sicence fields of study.
  • Provide an understanding of and practise with the methodology and related scientific techniques used in the study of polar environments, including emerging ideas and technologies used in the collection and anlysis of data.
  • Experience in the scientific method as it is practised by professional scientistis. These experiences include exposure to the process of scholarly critique, collaboration and practical field operations.

Career Outcomes

The course will provide the necessary training to either undertake further research in polar marine biology or keep participants abreast of the latest developments.


Articulation to/from Course


Successful candidates will be eligible to enter a MSc by research or PhD program.

Miscellaneous Information

Some Commonwealth supported places (HECS) are available for eligible Australian students. Also, in 2008 students who would be eligible for CentreLink payments for an undergraduate degree (e.g AusStudy, Youth Allowance) can apply for an equivalent university funded scholarship to do the MAntSc. From 2009 it is expected that eligible students will be able to apply directly to CentreLinkfor financial support.
