Introduction

The Bachelor of Behavioural Science with Honours provides students who have graduated from a Bachelor of Behavioural Science with sufficient merit, the opportunity to complete an accredited fourth year program in Psychology.

The BBehavSc(Hons) program provides training in research, advanced theoretical topics and an introduction to professional training and is identical to that offered in the BA(Hons), BSc(Hons) and the fourth year of the BPsych. It is the pathway to postgraduate training and research for BBehavSc graduates.

The BBehavSc(Hons) is normally undertaken by full-time study. Part-time enrolments require School of Psychology approval.

Admission & Prerequisites

Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Behavioural Science with Honours require the approval of Faculty and shall have qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Behavioural Science at this University or equivalent qualification at another approved tertiary institution. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain a standard of proficiency at least equal to a Distinction average in the 200 and 300 level units in the Psychology major and the 200 level units in the Behavioural Science minor.

Course Objectives

The main objectives of the fourth year psychology course are to provide for the completion of an integrated and comprehensive education in the discipline of psychology, to permit advanced level study in a range of areas, and to develop competence in conducting research. It seeks to provide academic preparation of students in the scientist/practitioner model and equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required for roles as provisionally registered psychologists and as a basis for further postgraduate study in professional training programs or in research.

Articulation to/from Course

BBehavSc(Hons) graduates will be eligible to apply for entry to postgraduate professional training courses in psychology, e.g. MPsych(Clin), and other professional specialisations offered at other tertiary institutions.

Professional Recognition

The BBehavSc(Hons) is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society.

Completion of a four-year accredited program followed by two years of supervised experience or postgraduate training is required for registration as a psychologist under The Psychologists Registration Act of Tasmania. Membership of the Australian Psychological Society requires a four-year degree followed by at least a two-year postgraduate degree.
