Introduction
The Bachelor of Environmental Design is a three-year course offered on either a full-time or part-time basis through the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology and available through the School of Architecture & Design. It is undertaken on campus in Inveresk, Launceston.
Students enrolling in the course select one of the three design specialisations offered in Architecture, Furniture Design or Interior Design. Students study some units in common allowing for cross design fertilisation and student networking and also complete specialist units related to their chosen field of design.
Each specialisation has the design studio/design workshop at its core supported by studies in relevant history and theory, building/manufacturing, environmental technologies and design communication. Elective units allow students to broaden their study and take a minor study in a related area if they wish.
Course delivery is through design studio or workshop projects, lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshop activities and site visits. Assessment is based on design studio or workshop projects, assignments, and tutorial, seminar and workshop participation.
Admission & Prerequisites
The Faculty considers for admission students who have a broad academic background and a demonstrated interest in, commitment to and aptitude for design.
Apart from the University's general admission requirements, there are no additional prerequisites for the BEnvDes degree. HSC/TCE subjects preferably should not be restricted to a narrow discipline, but rather span two or more areas (e.g. art and science).
A limited number of quota places is available to applicants who do not meet the normal University entry requirements. Such applicants will be required to attend an interview and present a folio of creative work and/or demonstrate skills and knowledge that suggest they could successfully undertake the course. Such students applying for the Bachelor of Environmental Design (Furniture) will enrol in the Associate Degree in Furniture Design with the opportunity to articulate into the degree course upon successful completion of the Associate Degree.
Course Objectives
The Bachelor of Environmental Design prepares all graduates for an increasingly design research driven practice with a focus on environmentally sustainable design within each specialisation.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) is primarily a pre-professional course and thus aims to produce graduates whose creative abilities are developed to a level of competence necessary to gain admission to the Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours, Master of Architecture, and equivalent courses in the fields of architecture, town planning and related design areas.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Furniture Design) prepares graduates for practice as furniture designers either independently or within furniture or multidisciplinary design practices. This requires that they have both generalised and specialised knowledge in design, making, manufacture and professional and business practice. The course aims to develop students' creative and research abilities to a level necessary to gain aadmission to the Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Interior Design) prepares graduates for interior design practice as independent designers, within interior design practices or in multidisciplinary architecture and design practices. The focus of the course is on commercial, retail, residential and public interiors. The course aims to develop students' creative abilities to a level sufficient to gain admission to the Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours.

Articulation to/from Course
The Associate Degree in Furniture Design articulates into the third year of the Bachelor of Environmental Design (Furniture Design).
There may be some credit granted for completion of theAssociate Diploma of Applied Science (Building and Architecture), which is offered by TAFE Tasmania, however this will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
The Architecture specialisation is designed as a pre-professional course and articulates directly into the Master of Architecture.
Professional Recognition
Students from all specialisations are eligible for Associate Membership of the Design Institute of Australia.
