Introduction

G3A Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science (combined degree) is in teach-out. Applicants wishing to enrol in this combined degree should now apply for 33I Bachelor ofEconomics and Bachelor of Science.

This four-year (minimum) full-time , 9-year (maximum) part-time course is offered at the Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast campuses. At the Launceston campus the first year only is available; at the Cradle Coast Campus only a limited number of first year units will be available. Students must transfer to Hobart to complete the combined degree.

Admission & Prerequisites

In addition to meeting the University's basic admission requirements, applicants must also have the following: Satisfactory Achievement result or better in:

  • The Science component - MT843 Mathematics Stage 3 or MT841 Mathematics Stage 2. Students who have not completed the Science Mathematics prerequisite may satisfy the prerequisite by successfully completing the summer Mathematics Bridging Unit (KMA003).

    Students are also encouraged to have studied some of the following subjects: IT862 Computer Science; CH856 Chemistry; GG833 Geography; EV846 Environmental Science; GL876 Geology; PH866 Physics; BY826 Biology; and SC786 Physical Sciences.

  • Up to one year of credit for completed TAFE programs will be awarded for the BSc component on the same basis as for the single degree. Students should contact the Faculty Office for more information.

  • The Economics component - MAP5C Mathematics Applied, or an equivalent unit, or, a higher level Mathematics subject as accepted by the School of Economics and Finance and/or the Faculty of Business. Applicants who do not have the economics mathematics prerequisite and who wish to enrol for this combined degree should contact the Faculty Office concerning a pathway into this component of the combined degree.

    Students returning to study either after a long absence and/or new students, who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills should enrol in the unit UPP090 Bridging Maths or BEA109 Introduction Quantitative Methods before enrolling in BEA140 Quantitative Methods. International students undertaking a mathematics bridging program may only take BEA109. For further information on these programs please contact the UPP Coordinator ((03) 6430 4905).

  • Students who have completed a diploma or advanced diploma in a business related discipline from an Australian institute of TAFE and who have been admitted to the course may receive credit towards the degree. The Faculty of Business also offers direct credit for its awards. For example, a BBus student wishing to transfer to the BEc with credit and vice versa receives direct credit. BEc students who transfer to the combined degree will also receive direct credit. Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure. In the case of international students, credit for previous study will be determined on application.

  • Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives. English language skills will also need to be verified. International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. It is anticipated that this combined degree will be recognised by the professional bodies that recognised the programs in the BEc. For the BSc component, graduates are eligible for membership of a number of professional organisations, specific details are provided under individual discipline entries.
