Introduction

THIS COURSE IS OFFERED ON A HECS-BASIS TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS. FOR ALL OTHER STUDENTS THIS COURSE IS OFFERED ON A FEE-PAYING BASIS ONLY.

The Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts is a professionally oriented course that facilitates technical and conceptual development through studio practice in contemporary arts. Studio options include: Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, Digital Design, Gallery Practices or a cross-disciplinary approach.

The Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts is a single-semester full-time or equivalent half-time study program. Students may apply for semester 1 or semester 2 entry.

Admission & Prerequisites

To qualify for admission, applicants must demonstrate, during an interview process, the potential to undertake the Graduate Certificate of Contemporary Arts. Normally applicants should have a degree in Visual Arts, Design, Theatre or Music or in an accepted cognate discipline.
A person who possesses such other qualifications and professional experience deemed by the Faculty to provide an adequate preparation for study equivalent to that provided for by an undergraduate degree, may be admitted to the course.

Non English speaking international students who make application to the MCA are required to have achieved an IELTS score of at least Band 6 with a minimum of 6.0 on all Bands, or a TOEFL score of 575 with a test of written English no less than 4.5. Either test score must be no more than 24 months old.

Course Objectives


The Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts program objectives are to:


  • Provide professional studio/workplace-orientated experiences that have the capacity to extend the student's understanding and appreciation of arts-related concepts, propositions and contemporary professional practices;

  • Learn and practise correct occupational health and safety procedures applicable to owner/operator arts businesses and group workplace environments;

  • Provide significant opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue and review with a variety of professional arts practitioners including visiting scholars, artists in residence, curators, art directors, performers, playwrights, arts administrators and entrepreneurs through the School's visitor program; and

  • Learn and practise a range of generic skills within the units of study that improve a student's ability to: retrieve, analyse, interpret and adapt information to different settings; develop written and oral skills for a range of audiences; define, evaluate and solve problems in creative ways that respect social, cultural and environmental concerns; see themselves in a global context and grasp an appreciation of the connection between local and international perspectives in the way the discipline is practised and perceived; and reflect on ideas and outcomes as part of the learning processes.

Career Outcomes

Career outcomes for graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts may include: theatre practitioner, musician, visual artist, graphic designer, teacher, curator and arts administrator.


Articulation to/from Course

Credit may be given, at the discretion of the Faculty, for achievements by students in other awards and professional practice areas at equivalent level.

Students who have passed appropriate units towards the Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Arts or Master of Contemporary Arts will be entitled to transfer to the Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts with full equivalent credit.


Students who have passed appropriate units towards the Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Arts, may apply to undertake the Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Arts with full credit. Students who have passed appropriate units towards the Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Arts may apply to undertake the Master of Contemporary Arts with full credit.

Miscellaneous Information

Students previously enrolled in the MCA who have successfully completed sufficient units may apply to take out the GradCertCA.
