Introduction
This is an integrated four-year full-time or eight-year part-time course offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart and Launceston.
Admission & Prerequisites
Applicants for the BPsych must meet minimum university entrance requirements. Satisfactory achievement in TCE Science and/or Mathematics subjects is desirable, eg, BIO315109 Biology, MTM315109 Mathematics Methods or MTA315109 Mathematics Applied, CHM315109 Chemistry or PSC315109 Physical Sciences, and may be required for students wishing to take first year elective units in Science and Health Science.
There will be a limited quota of places for entry to the first year of the program and applications are ranked on the basis of academic merit, based on the ITI score.
A further intake at second year is also based on academic merit. The number of places in the program will be limited to a maximum of 30 at each year level.
Progression from Year 3 to Year 4 depends on academic merit. Students must attain an average of 75% or above on all intermediate and advanced psychology (KHA) units in the Psychology major. Students who fail to meet the standard for progression to Year 4 of the degree will be exited from the BPsych to the BBehavSc and will be eligible to graduate with a BBehavSc and to apply for the BBehavSc(Hons).
Students entering the BPsych should seek advice from a Degree Coordinator on unit and discipline choices.
Course Objectives
The Bachelor of Psychology is an integrated four-year sequence of study which provides a thorough education in the scientific discipline of psychology and introduces students to the applications of psychology. Students also gain some educational breadth by studying other disciplines at least to the second year level. Advanced theoretical level study in core areas and applied topics in psychology together with advanced research training is undertaken in the fourth year of the program.
The program seeks to provide academic preparation of students in the scientist/practitioner model and equip graduates with the knowledge and skills for roles as provisionally registered psychologists. It provides graduates with a rigorous grounding in scientific methodology, critical thought and scholarly discourse.
Career Outcomes
The degree provides students with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate study in psychology leading to careers in research and neuroscience, and in professional specialisations such as clinical, health, educational, sport, organisational and forensic psychology.
Articulation to/from Course
Credit for relevant units will be given to transferring students.
